From 20-27 May 2019, The Shaikh Group visited Beijing and Shanghai for consultations with senior Chinese experts of the country's leading think-tanks and research institutes on the current situation in the MENA region.

Discussions were convened at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), the Chinese Institute of International Studies (CIIS), the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), Xinhua News Agency, Peking University, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS), Shanghai University's Center for Global Studies, the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS), and with China's Syria Envoy Ambassador Xie Xiaoyan.

TSG's consultations focused, in particular, on the geopolitical and socio-economic drivers of conflicts in the region, and possible constructive paths towards their mitigation and resolution. Much attention was devoted to the situation in the Persian Gulf, Iran, the Syrian war and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, among other issues. The consultation trip was part of TSG's Track II "Middle East Strategic Dialogue", which has over recent months convened Chinese interlocutors, alongside former officials and senior experts from the US, Russia, Europe and India, for a dialogue on conflict prevention, mitigation and resolution in the MENA region.
